At his core, he's a good man who's lost in the world and trying desperately to do the Right Thing, fix all the Wrongs that he sees in the world, but in the process forgot how to embody all those qualities he thought were worth protecting in the first place.

Okay, maybe that's a little too altruistic. Frank didn't start with such lofty goals; he started as many young men do, with a little bit of well-intentioned but restless violence in his heart and a decision to enlist as soon as he finished high school. He learned how to defend his country, learned how to exorcise those particular demons by becoming the best he could at stomping out the Bad Guys overseas. And when the weight of all the killing he was more than proficient at got to be too heavy, well by then he'd built himself a family. Learned that there was more to life than violence, and that he could be good at other things too, maybe. He was willing to entertain the idea, to build himself into something Better, into something Worthwhile, but the death of his family put a damper on those plans and tipped him towards where he is today.

Because Frank knows right from wrong. He knows how to behave like a normal human being, but he believes himself to be a human weapon more than anything else. A man forged to be good at one thing and one thing only, and therefore not much good for anything else with his reason for trying to rise above it removed. At least, that's what he believes. So instead he chooses to play fast and loose with morality, telling himself that the violence and pain and death that he causes is justified, because the people he hurts and kills are Bad People, when really all he's doing is venting his own pain and anguish on people he deems worse than him. Granted, the people he goes after are Bad People, mobsters and corrupt cops, and other people in places of authority who have abused their power, but despite his claims that it's because of their general crimes against others, in most cases, aside from those who interfere along the way, it's because of his quest for vengeance, nothing more, nothing less.

Everything Frank does, or is, these days, comes down to that. He closes himself off from others, refuses to make friends or outright tries to discourage those who try anyway, because he doesn't know who he can trust anymore, and so has decided not to trust anyone. He's deeply paranoid, and while it's not unwarranted, it makes him distance himself, even from those who tell him over and over that they want to help and have only ever shown sincerity in their claims. He actively avoids talking to people, even those who are friendly with him, both because he doesn't trust easily and because he doesn't want to pull innocents into the crossfire; when called out on his recklessness by Karen, he points out that he didn't hurt her, then proceeds to do everything in his power to keep her out of trouble, up to and including trying to push her away, and apologizes when she ends up in danger because of him later. He beats a man to death for offering him a child prostitute, he rescues a dog from a dogfighting ring, he sacrifices himself for that same dog because he'd rather lose his own life than get a dog killed out of his own stubbornness. While he avoids forming attachments to others the best he can, he does have a heart. He cares, far more about others than he ever does himself. He claims his crusade is for the good of others rather than a personal one, and time and time again he puts himself at risk with little regard for his own life even as he goes out of his way to protect those he feels are innocent.

While he's capable of showing compassion, and acting like a person instead of a killer robot, he takes great pains not to. To play the part of the monster he's portrayed as, up to and including putting on a show of being a murderous psychopath when on trial for his crimes, because he can't conceive of any other outcome for it other than going to prison. He knows what he did, knows it's wrong, and knows he doesn't have a good defense for it, because "they were responsible for my family's death" doesn't really justify large-scale murder, no matter how upset you are over it. But he takes on the role he does all the same, embodies it with every fiber of his being, because he feels it's "necessary". That someone has to do it because no-one else will, and everything important to him is already gone so he doesn't have anything to lose in it, and anyway if he can get vengeance for his family maybe he'll have some measure of peace.

Because at the end of the day, despite what he would have everyone around him believe, Frank's not a bad person. Maybe not as good as he could be, but based on what the audience is shown throughout the season it's more of an attempted defense mechanism than underlying character. He can't stand to see others hurt, either by bad people or because of him, and takes the latter intensely personally. He's honest, in general, and when he isn't it's for a purpose; to protect others, or because it's easier not to correct existing impressions. He abhors liars, and bullies, and those who take advantage of the weak, to the point where he will willingly sacrifice himself, put himself at active risk, for the sake of friends, family, and those he perceives as innocents, or whatever cause he believes is worth the risk. He loves his family, lighting up whenever he talks about them before they were killed. At his core, he's a man with little self-worth desperately trying to atone for what he sees as a personal failure the best way he knows how. ...granted, that means a vengeance quest to kill everyone involved in the death of his family and the subsequent cover up and, by extension, any other Bad Guy he comes across, but hey. That's what happens when the only way you know how to solve problems is through violence.
Appearance: Stereotypical jarhead in need of a haircut, but he makes a point to try not to stand out too much. Usually sporting several cuts and bruises in various states of healing.
How Do You Think They'll React to Being In Parthas? POORLY. Frank doesn't like to be told what to do in any given situation, and responds to being abducted even less well. He's a closed off person by nature as well, which means he's going to have a hell of a time getting into the swing of things.
Sample(s)?here's a post from forever ago
Anything Else? Frank doesn't have any Superpowers, he's bog-standard human. That being said, he was a marine from almost the day he graduated high school to when his family was killed, and even then he's still technically a marine, he just...never went back because he was in a coma for months so it's safe to say he was honorably discharged for Medical Reasons. So he's got a couple-few decades of all the training that goes with that under his belt; guns, survival, armed and unarmed combat, the whole nine yards. He's disconcertingly great at sneaking around and not getting caught, and concerningly good with explosives, and according to other characters on the show he's just about the best sniper of ever. He's in top physical condition on top of it, so suffice to say Frank is Really Good at killing and hurting people and let's leave it at that.

As far as inventory goes, he's got a duffel bag with a change of clothes, a bulletproof vest with a skull painted on the front, a K-bar knife, and a couple handguns with spare ammo.

comments
